Cycles of a wartime blogosphere

The Sri Lankan blogosphere is again resonating with the politics of the unavoidable – the country’s profitable war. Eventually we shall crawl back to the pleasures of how one might wear a sarong (the best of the week) and the blandness of nit picking identity. The faithful will do their rants and finger pointing and insist that we be saved through wisdom and dialogue and etc. Peppered about will be self referencing nasal keyboard peckings such as this.

Unless some more things go bang.

Perhaps we might spot the rarest beast in the Sri Lankan blogosphere: a discussion on how badly the rulers of the north and south need this war for their survival. And the sheer absurdity of expecting them to even seriously considering anything that might end the war.

Sittingnut offers some pragmatism. But from the response it is unpalatable for most. Because such wisdom is full of bitter reality, hard to swallow and doesn’t have a happy all encompassing solution that goes down like a decent red after a good meal. Yes a long sentence but I do not repent.

Naturally I’m not informed and therefore will resist the temptation to say anything that could be interpreted (however vaguely) as a political utterance (which would defy this site’s policy anyway). Thankfully I can hold it all back with dirty glass of pre-drunk vodka (pre-drunk by Boris of Keiv – the best).

  1. it’s all about how badly the rulers of the north need this war for their survival. And the sheer absurdity & stupidity of expecting them to even remotely considering anything that might end the war. They obviously cannot give up violence, give up the worst form of slavery (child soldiers, forcible recruits etc), give up their illegal economy (the only economy they know) such as heroin, extortion & arms smuggling etc which bring them millions & millions. Money for jam. They don’t have to toil like us & produce anything. Just buy and sell. Even their liberation fight is done by other peoples children. Very sorry. They will never tolerate or risk losing that, face elections or live in peaceful surroundings. problem is they have too much blood on their hands. The blood of all races & religions including Buddhist monks, Muslim worshippers, internationally recognised people such as Lalith, Gamini, Rajiv Gandhi, Tiruchelvam & Kadiragamar. Peace and democracy will bring them unbelievable hardship such as giving up their illegal businesses, extradition and the risk of blackmail, lawsuits & possible revenge. For example by the indian secret service RAW. Too many mortal enemies have they made. Thus their concept of an ethnically pure Tamil enclave surrounded by a chosen few.
they really are stuck in a jam. the jam is made of “pure ingredients” no colors or preservatives. In other words “Tamil only, no ther races”. Peace = Suicide.

  2. shanthikrishna: yours is one of the most well written comments on this “issue” I’ve seen in the blogosphere in a long long time. You’ve honestly outlined the obvious yet tragic facts. Thank you 🙂

  3. cerno, thanks for appreciating my views. But in my opinion there is actually no “issue”here. It’s a moronically simple case of a murderously paranoid, intolerant & irrational organisation let loose on civilisation. One’s really got to be an absolute moron to not realise what’s going on. Or incredibly stubborn. Or a brilliant businessman.

    As examples-
    1. which civilised organisation would murder their own intellectuals and potential leaders without the slighest hesitation ? Only one which is murderously paranoid.
    2. which civilised organisation would always walk out of peace talks giving excuses so ridiculously funny that it would seem Mr. Bean is second best. Only one which is so intolerant that people of another race would be seen as rats carrying the bubonic plague.
    3. which civilised organisation would suicide bomb the prime minister of India? And to cap it all off a “Gandhi” for god’s sake ? Which organistion would force their geriatrics & breastfeeding mothers to practice warfare with broomsticks?
Against all volunteer professional forces with mig 27’s, MBR’s, Main Battle Tanks and warships? Which organistion would help to defeat a friendly candidate and install a potentially hostile one unless totally & hopelessly irrational? It actually would sound hilarious if it was’nt so horrendous. Would’nt it ?

Problem is although the facts are starkly obvious and horrifying to the marrow of our bones they are always veiled in diplomatic language. T

You can either call an egg an egg or you can call it “an oval or round object laid by a female bird, reptile, fish, or invertebrate and containing an ovum which if fertilized can develop into a new organism”.

  4. cerno, thanks a lot for appreciating my views. But in my opinion there is actually no “issue”here. It’s a moronically simple case of an uneducated, murderously paranoid, intolerant & irrational organisation let loose on civilisation.
And they’ve become billionaires with international clout ! God help all. One’s really got to be an incredibly stubborn person to not realise what’s going on. Or a brilliant businessman.

Against an all volunteer professional force with ten times the manpower, mig 27’s, MBR’s, Main Battle Tanks and warships? Which organistion would help to defeat a friendly candidate and install a potentially hostile one unless totally & hopelessly irrational?

It actually would sound hilarious if it wasn’t so horrendous. Would’nt it ?

One of the biggest problems is that, although the facts are starkly obvious and horrifying to the marrow of our bones, the murder and mayhem is always hidden in very diplomatic, honorable or sentimental jargon.

    “LIBERATION”, “ASPIRATIONS”, “STRUGGLE,” “DESTINY” etc.

You can either call an egg, an “egg” or you can call it
“an oval or round object laid by a female bird, reptile, fish, or invertebrate and containing an ovum which if fertilized can develop into a new organism”.

    Let’s cut the crap.

  6. shanthikrishna 😀 not to worry – no misunderstandings 🙂

The tragic part (the “issue” which I refer to) is that very people describe the situation in the basic facts as you have done.

Its all about one-up-manship and exchanging accusations. Justifying cruelty for past violence and the dumb idea of domination based on cultural identity.

  7. there is a train of thought which suggest that since during ranils regime karuna broke away, we would have been better off with him at the helm. But LTTE was getting unprecedented international exposure, support and above all “recognition”. very soon they would have been non terrorist. govt. was turning a blind eye towards everything the LTTE was indulging in including arms shipments, a grave threat to the very existense of the state. All with the open support of ranil and his ministers.

what if prabha & karuna became strong seperately (got all the international recognition & the arms) then decided to merge? who to tell ?

    Never know.

  8. Imagine that a person who is having a simple but painful leg sprain gets a heart attack. what are the doctor’s priorities?
Apply balm on the leg or perform open heart surgery?
likewise the state should get it’s priorities in order.
first rid the country of the worst menace it has ever faced in it’s entire history.
get that out of the way and we are home and dry.
