The images below show views of the Weli Oya area from several directions. A Defencenet blog post on this area describes it as the possible next front in fighting between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government. This area is officially part of the Mahaweli development project’s System L. The history of the Weli Oya area is also deeply enmeshed with the tragic history of ethnic politics in Sri Lanka. Any Google search on “Weli Oya” will bring up highly partisan accounts of the problem.
The facts are of course buried in there somewhere.
- I’ve add a Google Earth location file (.kmz file) for the area on the Google Earth community forum.
Please note that these Google Earth images are about 3-5 years old.
