This MP3 player is built to fit inside the curved ammunition magazine of an AK47 assault rifle. Its attaches to the weapon instead of the AK47’s iconic ammunition magazine – thereby rendering the weapon unusable. Supposedly to result in world peace. Since you can’t shoot people when listening to music on it – or so the manufacturers claim. 😉 They point out that the widespread use of AK47s in the world offers a huge market their product. 😐 Of course they don’t say anything about the purchasing power of their “end users”.
The product images of the AK47 MP3 player are rather dubious. The product looks too big to fit on an actual is the thing actually fits into an AK47 assault rifle. I’m not a weapons expert. Perhaps it only fits on more modern version which have thankfully not reached us in the third world. However the models displaying the product will no doubt cause enough distraction to prevent close scrutiny of the product.
The Sri Lankan market for this product is tiny. Though Sri Lanka has a large AK47 user base, it is doubtful that a vast majority of operators (soldiers/LTTE cadres) can afford any stand alone MP3 player. The only viable market is as a vanity item for high profile organised crime figures such as politicians and their offspring. Even they might not be interested unless the thing was gold plated. As for functionality in the Sri Lankan scene, nothing is said about T56 assault rifle compatibility.
Yes this “product” has been around for a while. I came across the web-site years ago. The fact that the product is still there is surprising. Perhaps they found a market. At least for their posters 😉
This product is not the only “conversions” of the AK. There’s the Escopetarra – a guitar made from a decommissioned AK47.
The only overarching cultural influence both these things might fit into it the “Swords to ploughshares” thing.
In reality the AK47 MP3 player at least sounds hopelessly idealistic at best. But it makes an interesting bit of geek tech trivia.
