Seeing clearly

Handwriting made up of scratchy lines pop into crisp shapes. It doesn’t matter that years of keyboarding has rendered penmanship to scrawl. Reading text on paper has stopped being a strain. The annoyance of frozen text size is gone. The relief has the feel of entering the cool shade of a tree in the glare of a hot day.

By contrast the text on the phone looks huge. The result of cranking up the text size month by month. May be it is time to descend the text to a ‘normal’ size. Risky move. It will force a fumble for reading glasses every time the gadget hums.

I started using glasses on the first of January. A surrender to the truth of decay we call “ageing”. The idea of being dependent on a thing you put on the face to see clearly will time to sink in.

Buying the reading glasses was a string of new rituals. The eye test. Weighing the pros of cons of ‘general’ glasses vs reading glasses. Then the bewildering opinion maze of buying the frame. How it changes the face is startling.

For the day to day I don’t need glasses. It’s for close range only. For now. Not for the huge screen at work. So my secret will stay in its little case. Eventually I’ll have to pull it out. Perhaps in front of client too.

Well, such is life.
