Cerno (pronounced cer-no) means:
Latin for “to perceive, to separate, sift, distinguish /decide, resolve, determine” From the English – Latin dictionary.
That’s about as deep this blog will ever get. It is written to stop the sentences flying around in my head from driving me insane. The process starts with a word, a phrase, a realisation about a situation, an overheard remark. Then it build and builds into an avalanche of ideas. Loosening words into sentences that start fires of ideas. Soon it’s a burning babble of voices in my head. They are easily swept away and brutally insistent.
The only way to make it stop is to write it down. My reward: a thin slice of mental peace. Then it starts again. That is what powers my blogging.
It is slavery. It is how I experience the mysterious push to write. A sensation close to what drives a diarrhoea sufferer to the latrine. Blogging provides a convenient satisfaction for this urge. Thus this blog is my mental latrine trench. Where digested experience of life get deposited in words. Like any good slave, I have conformed to the will of my masters. After doing this since 2007 I even got around to enjoy reading the peculiar stench of my own writing. Not bad no?

As for this blog, I intend to cling on to my “policy” of keeping it politics free. Let see if it lasts.

I realize that the vast majority of Sri Lankans regard their own history as wholly unique (and it is) but there are interesting points of comparison to be found in looking at other cultures that have endured war, revolution, etc., with a similar legacy of Theravada Buddhism in the air (and, in many cases, lying in ruins on the ground).

You have a very poignant points to make about the Sri Lankan view of their deep past. From my personal experience if boils down to the fact that during the last 60 years, the mythologised past has become a political tool separate from the facts. Its used to get people roused up and distracted by rhetoric so that duller things like good governance stay off the radar. All of which makes the study of ancient text in their orignal languages/lettering a political act. It eats away on the cooked up myths politicians live on.
